Who is ‘Virologie and Lucie’?
Meet Lucie, a student seeking to obtain Ph.D. in Virology, at the Faculty of Science at Charles University in Prague,
currently on maternity leave.
I come from Most (YES! #dyckymost*), where I studied at the local grammar school. Already then, I was the most interested in biology, which made me apply to the Faculty of Science for my university studies. When accepted, my mind was already painting a clear image: “I want to do genetics!”. This stuck with me, until I enrolled in a fortnight-long virology practicum during 2nd year of the bachelor studies.
Virology was love at the first sight pipetting
Suddenly, the choice of my follow-up master and doctoral programme became clear. I was completely consumed by the thought of how something so small could be affecting virtually all life on the planet.
I have never got over my amazement
During master studies, the fascination about virology was joined by immunology. And since sometimes life happens just the right way we need it, my dream came true, and now I work on a project focussing on the immune response against viral infection in the Laboratory of Tumour Virology at BIOCEV.
So, what is ‘Virologie and Lucie’ about?
During the year 2020, seeing how the covid pandemic was filling the headlines of the daily news, it bothered me how much of it is missing the much-needed context. Since I do not believe that arguing online in the comments sections can get us far, I decided to first start an Instagram profile, and then this website. Both with the goal to provide you, dear reader, with a bit clearer view on some of the many interesting facts from the world of virology, immunology, and molecular biology.
Making it this far, let me invite you to a (hopefully) enjoyable experience of learning something new, because knowledge… it is the only thing that no one can ever take away from you.
LUCIE
